About the Enterprise
North-West University, known as the NWU, presents itself as one of South Africa's top universities and welcomes prospective students with the message that it all starts here. The university offers programmes across eight faculties, three campuses and a distance learning offering, giving South African school-leavers a wide choice of where and what to study. Its three campuses are in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark, and alongside undergraduate degrees the NWU offers honours degrees, diplomas and certificates, master's and doctoral studies, distance learning, short courses through its Unit for Continuing Education, and the NWU Business School. The university also notes that its student community includes students from more than 50 countries.
Undergraduate studies are the starting point for most NWU students, and the university has built a clear application journey for South African applicants that moves from starting the journey, to application, to registration. Applications are made online. Before beginning, applicants need a valid personal email address, as one email address may only be used by one applicant, and their documents ready in PDF or JPEG format. Each document must be uploaded separately, including an ID document or passport, since birth certificates are not accepted, and final Grade 11 results or final Grade 12 results. A non-refundable administration fee of R150 applies to South African applicants, and R600 to international applicants, and it can only be paid online. To support applicants, the NWU provides helpful infographics on how to apply in ten steps, an application checklist, guidance on uploading supporting documents, a self-service guide to the application portal and instructions for completing the financial undertaking form. Applicants can also check their application status online.
The NWU publishes its key dates on its studies website. In the 2026 application cycle, applications opened on 1 June, selection courses closed on 30 June, general courses and residence applications closed on 31 August, and higher degree applications for master's and doctoral studies close on 30 November. Residence placement is requested simply by indicating interest during the online application, and applications for study admission and residence placement open and close together.
Admission is based on the National Senior Certificate. The NWU explains that applicants must obtain an NSC issued by Umalusi that indicates they have fulfilled the requirements for a bachelor's degree. The minimum requirement for admission to degree studies is an NSC with at least 50 percent in four 20-credit NSC subjects, and the Admission Point Score is calculated using six subjects, excluding Life Orientation. Faculties also set subject-specific requirements, which include the language of learning and teaching at 50 percent. The NWU offers an online APS calculator for NSC, ISC and SACAI results, and a conversion table for applicants from private or international school systems. The university stresses that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, that certain programmes are only offered on certain campuses, and that some programmes are available through distance learning while others are offered through full-time contact learning.
Grade 11 results carry real weight. The NWU uses final Grade 11 results to assess applications, and it describes these results as an applicant's first impression at university level. Strong results may improve the chances of provisional admission, while final acceptance depends on maintaining or improving results in matric. Owing to capacity constraints and high demand, the university reserves the right to select candidates for certain fields of study on the basis of their results. Selection courses include law programmes, graphic design, music, which requires up to two audition rounds, theology, urban and regional planning and engineering, and some programmes add psychometric assessments to academic selection. Applicants who do not meet the engineering programme requirements may be considered for the Xcel programme.
To help learners decide what to study, the NWU offers a free Interest-Index survey that produces a personalised report matching interests and strengths to possible subjects, fields of study and careers. It also provides guidance for Grade 9 learners choosing school subjects and for Grade 11 learners preparing for university. The eight faculties are Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Theology, covering fields that range from accounting sciences, tourism and industrial psychology to chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, pharmacy, nursing, kinderkinetics, music, agricultural sciences and computer sciences.
Each campus has its own character. The NWU describes the Mahikeng Campus as an innovative institution with a proud heritage, an exceptionally rich culture and an unwavering strive towards excellence. The Potchefstroom Campus combines a unique student experience with a research-driven dynamic, and the Vanderbijlpark Campus, also known as NWU Vaal, is described as picturesque, productive, pioneering and progressive. Residences are called the heartbeat of student life. The Mahikeng Campus offers 16 residences with furnished single and double rooms, Wi-Fi and round-the-clock security, the Potchefstroom Campus has a wide range of men's and women's residences, accommodation for sports students and day houses for students in private accommodation, and Vanderbijlpark's on-campus residences are situated in a proclaimed nature reserve.
Prospective students can get to know the university before they apply. Campus visits can be booked individually or as a group, ideally 48 to 72 hours in advance, and a personalised virtual tour lets applicants choose two courses, a campus and activities beyond the classroom. The NWU also hosts open days on each of its campuses. For funding, the university provides information on undergraduate, postgraduate and external bursaries, loans and tuition fee estimates per qualification.
The NWU's Potchefstroom Campus is at Building F1, 11 Hoffman Street, Potchefstroom 2531, and prospective undergraduate students can contact the NWU Call Centre on 0860 169 698.
